We are thankful for many things

At YMCA Global Kindergarten (YGK), we celebrated Thanksgiving Day at school.

In the morning, the students made their headdresses for this special day in their homeroom classes.  They made headdresses of a turkey, priest, Pilgrim man, Pilgrim woman, Native American man, and Native American woman.

After that, all the three classes got together in a classroom wearing their headdresses for the "Thanksgiving Meeting." The teachers introduced several Thanksgiving songs and we enjoyed singing and dancing together.  Then, they showed us several pictures of Pilgrims and Native Americans which gave us images of the old days in America.

Next, the teachers divided them into several groups according to their headbands.  Whenever we heard any specific word, such as Thanksgiving, corns, turkey, pilgrim men, etc, we needed to do a particular gesture and to say a predetermined phrase.

Along with the story that the teacher read for us, those words came up.  Thus, we had to focus on the story so that we would not miss a word.  That was so much fun, and we really loved this new style of story-telling.

The origin of the Thanksgiving was to show our gratitude toward the harvest of the year.  Nowadays, it is time to give thanks to the people or things around us.  So we talked about what we are thankful for.  Children raised their hands and shared their ideas, such as family, friends, food, or time spent with our friends…  We are thankful for so many things around us.  How happy we are to be able to express thankfulness!

After we enjoyed the Thanksgiving meeting, we sat around a big table and had a Thanksgiving lunch altogether.  It gave us such a special feeling!

That’s our Thanksgiving day this year.

Let’s see what will come up next… the Christmas Concert!  We are sure that it is going to be another happy and exciting day for us.  Let’s be prepared and enjoy fully!

 　YMCAグローバルキンダーガーテン（YGK）では、サンクスギビングのお祝いをしました。園児達は各クラスでこの特別な日のために、七面鳥、神父、ピルグリムの男性と女性、ネイティブアメリカンの男性と女性のヘッドバンドを作りました。
　それから、３クラスの園児全員がひとつの教室に集まって、サンクスギビングの集まりを持ちました。先生がサンクスギビングにまつわる歌を教えてくれたので、皆で楽しく歌い踊りました。そして、ピルグリムやネイティブアメリカンのイラストを見せてもらい、昔のアメリカの様子を想像してみました。
　次に、ヘッドバンド毎にグループ分けをしました。サンクスギビング、とうもろこし、七面鳥、ピルグリムの男性等、ある単語が読まれたら、決まったジェスチャーをして決められた言葉を言わなくてはなりません。

先生がサンクスギビングのお話を読み進めてくれると、これらの言葉が出てきますので、聞き逃さないようにとても集中して耳を傾けました。この新しいスタイルの読み聞かせが気に入ったようでどの子もとても楽しそうでした。
　さて、サンクスギビングはその年の収穫に感謝の気持ちを表すことから始まりました。今日では、身の周りの人たちや物事に感謝をするときになっています。そこで、どんなことや人たちに感謝をしたいかを園児達にも聞いてみました。どの子も積極的に手を挙げて自分の考えを聞かせてくれました。家族、お友達、お友達と一緒に過ごす時、等いろいろな人や物事が出ましたね。感謝の気持ちを表すことが出来るということはいかに恵まれたことでしょう！

サンクスギビングの集まりを終えた後には、大きなテーブルを囲んでサンクスギビングランチを皆で一緒にいただきました。特別感のある楽しいランチタイムでした。
　これが今年のサンクスギビングでした。

さて、次に来るのは…クリスマスコンサートです！きっとワクワクがたくさん詰まった楽しい時間になることでしょう。しっかりと準備をして、存分に楽しみましょう！
